The Author

Andrew Heyman lives and works in Seattle Washington USA.  His true vocation is political writing and agitating for the radical idea that a society that is governed by, and serves the needs of the people is best.

Andrew is also the member of a wonderful family with his loving wife, Pam, and the proud father of 2 wonderful children, Josie and Adam.  They all keep him from becoming immersed in blogging to an unhealthy degree, and remind him of why he cares about what is going on in this world in the first place.

Taguba Reminds Americans of How Far We Have Fallen

posted Sunday, 22 June 2008

Every once and a while, the lies and obfuscation of the current political system and climate in the US are ripped away by dissent well within the establishment.  It is a testament to the dark times that we live in, and is only reinforced by the fact that the mainstream media will vaporize such an occurance to the back pages of trivia.

Such is the report from Physicians for Human Rights, and its introduction by retired Major General Taguba:

This report tells the largely untold human story of what happened to detainees in our custody when the Commander-in-Chief and those under him authorized a systematic regime of torture. This story is not only written in words: It is scrawled for the rest of these individuals’ lives on their bodies and minds. Our national honor is stained by the indignity and inhumane treatment these men received from their captors.

. . .

After years of disclosures by government investigations, media accounts, and reports from human rights organizations, there is no longer any doubt as to whether the current administration has committed war crimes. The only question that remains to be answered is whether those who ordered the use of torture will be held to account.

These are chilling words considering the fact that Congress is essentially going to allow the Bush administration to leave office without being "held to account", and has in fact recently succeeded in creating immunity for their accomplices.

This adds the to sense of an impending radical shift in American society, one that will finally cement the open fascism of the Bushies, and apply it to the general population.   That is the next step, unless we seek justice and make amends for the crimes of our government.

The tools are there for Americans to do so.  That isn't to say that it won't require organizing and work; but it is well within the bounds of the possible.  It is our call.
